I’M JUST THE SINGER (1977)

Rob’s first recording, the first of eleven! Rob was a masterful player of guitar. He loved slide, and was a masterful picker. It is recognised that his strongest work was his instrumental pieces. Such beautiful playing made lyrics redundant.

Reverie was recorded in my lounge room over one week. Rob had not played guitar for several years, having gone into retreat. A school fete brought him out of “retirement” and he played many of these tracks live at the fete to sharpen up for the recording.

Some of his songs were lengthy pieces and Rob used to put himself under enormous pressure to achieve the perfect take. He would get all the way through an intricate and difficult five minute piece only to make one mistake in the last 30 seconds. Up until this recording, mistakes used to mean starting the whole thing over again. We did not have the facilities to edit takes before the digital era.

It is easy to see that Rob’s output was prolific and that he recorded more albums at Good*God than any other artist associated with the studio. The last two albums represent some of his finest moments.
